When I became a real estate trading services licensee and moved back to my home town to hang my shingle at Coast Realty at the age of twenty-four, I did not realize the life-altering implications it could have. Now looking back nearly seven years, two kids, two homes and almost 200 transactions later as an Associate Broker with Royal LePage Powell River, I don’t think I ever could have imagined doing anything else, anywhere else.

Selling real estate in Powell River has become as crucial to my identity as the nose on my face or hair (what’s left of it) on my head, and in so doing, I feel I have become synonymous with selling Powell River, one piece at a time.

Mid-way through my young career and at the persistent urging of an old friend and mentor - a Scottish immigrant and career real estate broker in Interior BC – I decided to tackle the Broker’s Business Planning and Financial Management Licensing course through UBC’s Sauder School of Business. It was then that I realized that selling real estate is not a job or even a career, it is a business with the truest entrepreneurial roots, as well as a valuable role in one’s community as you daily shape the very ground of a municipality or regional district by helping people sell or acquire their biggest investments: real estate. In the written part of the course I had to develop an in depth business plan for a fictional brokerage, only, instead of making up a fake company, I simply looked at my own market place, and asked myself, “what I could do to take my business to the next level?”

The answer was easy: do more for your clients than any competitor.

From that day on I put that plan in to action, enlisting the services of a professional photographer, home stager, floor-plan designer and videographer for every one of my listings, from single family detached homes, to condos, mobiles, modulars, townhouses, and duplexes. Since then my listings have on average sold quicker and closer to asking price, and my business has grown exponentially on the strength of the frequent recommendations of happy clients. Hardly a day goes by that someone doesn’t greet me with my own moniker, “Sell or Buy, I’m your Guy!” And every time they do it only reaffirms the importance of my role as REALTOR® in this beautiful town.

Now, in 2016, my team has grown to include a full time marketer and admin, and the acquisition of the Matterport 3D Imaging System; the greatest innovation in real estate sales, unique to my real estate business. It is the crown jewel of my vast suite of marketing tools, and an amazing resource for home owners, as it creates an immersive 3D image and floor plan for your home, which greatly helps our large contingent of out of market buyers see the many selling features.
